Thanks to proactive health monitoring from Vitalthings, Gaupne Care Center in Luster has eliminated manual supervision and reduced stress for night staff. - The fact that Somnofy doesn't use cameras also makes it easier to present the solution to relatives, says Kjell Olav Bondevik.
We see that Somnofy enables us to detect signs of deterioration more effectively and get ahead of the course of illness.
Kjell Olav Bondevik
Advisor for professional development in health and care
Luster Municipality
He is an advisor for professional development in health and care services in Luster municipality. Bondevik holds many roles within the municipality, working with everything from needs assessments and procurement to installation and implementation of welfare technology. He is also responsible for mapping out the benefits and realized gains of new technology.
– We have a facility with 28 care units on ground level, divided into three different groups, all managed by one night shift worker. That means a lot of running around at night. Some of our patients are in poor condition, so we wanted to find a system that could support our night staff. We looked into different solutions for supervision and sleep monitoring. We were really eager to get sleep monitoring in place. That need is what led us to start using Somnofy, says Bondevik.
So far, Somnofy has been used in more than 40 municipalities. Now, Vitalthings Guardian H10 is launching—the next generation of health monitoring for municipalities—designed for medical services. Les mer om den her.
How does Somnofy help you address the challenges you face?
– We’re still in an early phase, but we’re already seeing less running around. We have a better overview.
Bondevik adds that they’ve also used Somnofy to monitor air quality – temperature and ventilation.
– These data have enabled us to implement measures before the users go to sleep, says Bondevik.

How is Vitalthings' solution different from the way you normally work?
– We’ve seen that night staff now have less to do. One department has completely eliminated manual supervision, while others have reduced it. We’ve also started using the night reports to identify potential issues related to deteriorating health conditions. We see that Somnofy allows us to detect warning signs earlier and stay ahead of the disease progression, says Bondevik.
How is Somnofy different from other welfare technology solutions?
– We find that Somnofy gives us more oversight and better sleep data. The most important aspect for us has been using technology that provides continuous insight into whether a patient is asleep or not. With Somnofy, we get a sleep score that helps us plan the day for each user. Another key benefit is the ability to anticipate health developments. Last but not least, privacy is important. The fact that Somnofy doesn’t use a camera makes the solution easier to introduce to relatives. Overall, Somnofy has given us the most value, says Bondevik.
The Guardian H10, the successor to Somnofy, is designed for medical services, and will address even more needs in municipal healthcare. It is built on the same technological platform as Guardian M10, without the use of cameras or body-worn sensors, making it less intrusive in terms of patient safety and user comfort.
– In the health service, there is a growing need to handle more complex patients in institutions, care homes and at home. With Guardian H10, we have developed a solution that enables proactive, early intervention and replaces manual supervision, as well as safeguarding the user's privacy, says CEO of Vitalthings, Bård Benum.
